Firefighters face growing risk of skin cancer from toxic exposure, warns WE Solicitors

WE Solicitors is warning that firefighters across the UK may face an increased risk of developing skin cancer due to repeated exposure to toxic contaminants encountered during emergency incidents.

While the dangers of smoke inhalation are widely recognised, growing evidence suggests that harmful substances released during fires, including carcinogenic particles from burning materials, can settle on the skin and remain even after incidents have ended.

These contaminants, which can include chemicals from plastics, building materials and other synthetic products, may be absorbed through the skin or transferred during the removal of protective equipment. Areas such as the face, neck and wrists are particularly vulnerable.

Over time, repeated exposure to these substances may significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma.

A hidden occupational risk

Firefighters regularly operate in hazardous environments, but the long term risks associated with skin exposure have historically received less attention.

Concerns are now growing that:

  • decontamination procedures may not always be sufficient
  • protective equipment may not fully prevent exposure
  • contaminated gear can prolong contact with harmful substances

With many firefighters attending hundreds of incidents over the course of their careers, the cumulative impact of exposure is a serious and ongoing concern.

Call for greater awareness and protection

WE Solicitors is urging greater awareness of the issue, alongside improved safety measures, including:

  • enhanced decontamination protocols
  • regular cleaning and replacement of protective equipment
  • routine health monitoring and skin checks for firefighters

Early detection is critical in improving outcomes for skin cancer, making regular screening essential for those at risk.

Comment from WE Solicitors

Steve Evans of WE Solicitors said:

“Firefighters put themselves at risk every day to protect the public, but there is increasing concern about the long-term impact of the environments they are exposed to.

Skin exposure to toxic contaminants is an issue that has not always been fully recognised. Even with protective equipment, firefighters can come into contact with harmful substances that may have serious consequences over time.

It is vital that more is done to raise awareness of these risks and to ensure that proper protections are in place. Where those protections fall short and individuals suffer harm, they should be supported in understanding their legal options.”

Legal support for affected firefighters

WE Solicitors has extensive experience supporting individuals affected by occupational illness, including those exposed to hazardous substances in the workplace.

Firefighters who have developed skin cancer as a result of their work may be entitled to bring a claim for compensation, particularly where adequate safety measures were not in place.
