Hand–arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) is a serious and often permanent condition caused by prolonged use of vibrating tools and machinery. It most commonly affects construction workers, groundworkers, road workers, engineers, mechanics, factory workers and anyone who regularly uses certain tools.
What is HAVS?
HAVS is caused by repeated exposure to vibration through the hands and arms. Over time, this damages blood vessels, nerves and joints.
The condition often develops gradually and may initially seem minor, but it can become permanent and disabling.
Workers using some of these tools might be affected by HAVS.
