Noise-induced hearing loss & tinnitus
Long-term exposure to excessive workplace noise can cause permanent hearing loss by damaging the hair cells in the cochlea. Many people mistake the symptoms for aging, but noise at work often affects higher frequencies, making conversations and certain letters like T, D, and S hard to hear.
Signs to be aware of
- Difficulty following conversations, especially with background noise
- Missing parts of words or sentences
- Turning the TV up louder than normal
- Struggling to hear on the phone
- Being told you are shouting when speaking normally
Treatment & Support
Noise-related hearing loss is permanent. Hearing aids can help and are available via the NHS or privately. Your GP will usually refer you to an audiologist, and sometimes an ENT specialist. If your hearing loss is caused by workplace noise, you may be able to claim the costs of private hearing aids and maintenance.
