Stage fall claim puts spotlight on event safety

Stage fall claim puts spotlight on event safety

Stephen Fry has reportedly issued a claim after suffering serious injuries at the CogX Festival, held at The O2 Arena.

The broadcaster is said to have fallen from the stage after delivering a keynote speech, sustaining fractures to his leg, hip, pelvis and ribs.

The incident demonstrates a very straightforward legal duty:- organisers and venues must take reasonable steps to ensure stages and event spaces are safe. Failures in design, lighting or basic risk management can quickly lead to serious harm. This is not just applicable to performers, but to the audience, the venues need to be safe for the public and all risks assessed properly.

Steve Evans of WE Solicitors said:

“Incidents like this highlight how quickly things can go wrong when safety isn’t properly addressed. A stage fall is entirely foreseeable and, in many cases, preventable. Where that’s the case, those responsible should expect to be held to account.”

If you’ve been injured at a public event, WE Solicitors can advise on your rights and whether you have a claim.
